It’s hard to remember things anymore. We go through so much content in any given day that mostly just turns into… noise. That’s a bit of a shame.
Write That Down is me trying to fight that. I’m, quite literally, writing down the music, movies, videos, articles, anything that made the most impact on me, every week. Part of it is for me — writing down my immediate thoughts on anything solidifies it and makes it more memorable.
It’s also for you, though. Write That Down is, by nature, curatorial. It’s a little snapshot of the things that I think are interesting, and hopefully are things that you find interesting too. Maybe it’ll help you cut out some of the noise too.
Notes to Self 📝
- Thinking about time as a very limited resource that needs to be budgeted in an excellent way to get shit done, and also an excellent way to give yourself a lot of anxiety.
- Family relationships will never be perfect — make peace with that.
Watch This 📺 The Sandman
Netflix’s newest adaptation of The Sandman is good. I’d never read the original graphic novels — they always seemed so heavy and impenetrable. In a way, the new show is like that too, but it carries with it an air of dreamlike mystery that draws you into its arms.
It’s been a while since a fictional world pulled me in so strongly. The world of The Endless scratches a very specific itch I had, with its magical world, ineffable dream-logic and strange characters.
Watch it if you like fantastical stories about immortal godlike beings, if you like Neil Gaiman’s other work, or if you liked the graphic novels.
Listen to This 🎧 The 1975 and Rina Sawayama
Happiness and Part of the Band – The 1975
The 1975 are back. They’re still one of the most polarising, ambitious, annoying, brilliant, pretentious bands currently active, and you can see why in these two tracks.
Happiness is very “1975-ey”. It’s an upbeat song with shimmering guitars, a really sticky melody, some great sax parts, and just a tinge of melancholy in the lyrics. Think: Girls meets Chocolate meets It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You).
Part of the Band continues Matt Healy‘s tradition of putting the most beautiful lyric you’ve ever heard in the same 30 seconds as the absolute worst lyrics you’ve ever heard, and I mean that in a loving way. Guess which is which in this track.
Hold the Girl – Rina Sawayama
She’s the queen of mining childhood trauma and turning it into an endless stream of bangers. Hold the Girl is the title track of her upcoming album, and a beautiful cinematic dance-pop track about healing your inner child. Bonus points for a music video that really brings the drama.

Young people have a weird dilemma in the year of the Lord 2022. We’ve got more power and are louder than we’ve ever been… but many of us still feel blocked from being able to make actually meaningful changes to the world we live in.
We’ve all wondered: why are the people in most positions of power so damn old?
Derek Thompson explores the topic and pulls together some unexpected tangents in his article in The Atlantic.
